Dimensions of Metaphorical Meaning
Recent work suggests that concreteness and imageability play an important role in the meanings of figurative expressions. We investigate this idea in several ways. First, we try to define more precisely the context within which a figurative expression may occur, by parsing a corpus annotated for metaphor. Next, we add both concreteness and imageability as “features” to the parsed metaphor corpu...
متن کاملAgainst Lepore and Stone’s Sceptic Account of Metaphorical Meaning
In this paper, we discuss Lepore and Stone’s account of metaphor which is based on three of Davidson’s proposals: (i) the rejection of metaphorical meanings; (ii) the rejection of metaphors as conveying metaphorical propositional contents; and (iii) the defence of analogy as the key mechanism for understanding metaphors. Lepore and Stone defend these proposals because the non-sceptic strategy o...
متن کاملThe Meaning of Metaphorical Gestures
In gesturing metaphorically, people use physical space to represent abstract ideas that have no spatial instantiation in the world (e.g., gesturing upward to indicate high intelligence). متن کاملPutting the World Outside Himself: Metaphorical Meaning in the Zhuangzi
The Zhuangzi was originally compiled around 350-300 BCE, or the Warring States period, during which many classic Chinese philosophical works were written. Like the Dao De Jing and other canonical Daoist texts written around this time, the Zhuangzi has been used as a meditative guide and self-cultivation handbook for people looking to escape the social pressures of traditional Chinese culture. T...
متن کاملConsiderations on the nature of metaphorical meaning arising from a computational treatment of metaphor interpretation
This paper argues that there need not be a full correspondence between source and target domains when interpreting metaphors. Instead, inference is performed in the source domain, and conclusions transferred to the target. A description of a computer system, ATT-Meta, that partially implements these ideas is provided.
